Rasāyana, with the literal meaning, “path of essence” is the overarching Sanskrit term used in South Asian texts for “alchemy.” This word has found roots up to 10th century CE, and several centuries later, was used in early ayurvedic medicine to describe the science of lengthening lifespan or “rejuvenation therapy.”

In India, alchemy was started in an attempt to find a transmutation process to convert base metals into gold and later for the preparation of an elixir of life for imparting immortality, according to Rasāyana (Alchemy) by David Gordon White. Indian alchemy derived its colour and flavour to a large extent from the Tantric cult. Alchemical rasāyana having spiritual aims. alchemical elixirs also are described as eradicating disease and prolonging life, and in some cases ascribed with providing superhuman powers.

The ancient seers found that substances of different origin (herbal, metal or animal) in addition to codes of conduct and dietary regulations are suitable tools to maintain health in healthy and eradicating diseases in diseased. Use of metallic preparations in healthcare is a unique feature in this system a type of 'exotic matter'. Processed metals including Mercury, Gold, Silver, Lead, Zinc, Copper etc. were used very frequently by seers of the Indian tradition in different disease conditions with great authority. It is generally claimed, that these metals are detoxified during the highly complex manufacturing processes described in Ayurvedic, especially Rasashastra texts. Charaka Samhita, one of the scheduled books of Ayurveda also holds ample of references regarding the use of metals for different purposes.

Ayurveda is the science made up of Veda (knowledge) and Ayush (life) i.e. knowledge of life. An Ayurvedic system adopts a holistic approach towards health care by balancing the physical, mental and spiritual functions of the human body. Rasa-Shastra (vedic-chemistry) is one of the parts of Ayurveda, which deals with herbo-mineral/metals/non-metals preparations called Bhasmas. Rasayana[1] (immunomodulation and anti-aging quality) and yogavahi (ability to target drugs to the site) are characteristics of a properly made herbo-mineral/metals/non-metals preparation, which is also nontoxic, gently absorbable, adaptable and digestible in the body.
