In Persia Wild Rue (Perisan 'Esfand') is still used today in folk medicine and in magical practices. It is known to protect against the evil eye, for banishing dark entities and keeping one safe from the dark djinn as well as for instantly cleansing your space of stagnant or negative energy. 
 
This tradition comes from ancient days of Zoroastrianism.  Burning wild rue seeds makes a popping sound and releases a strong and warm scent that encompasses the entire space.
 
The smoke that comes from the burning seeds is encircled round one’s head and in distribution around the home reciting a prayer or simply the words "May this Esfand(wild rue)  keep away evil thoughts and intentions from our home and lives." 
 
The popping sound indicates there is an excess of negative energy present, the more popping it makes, the more negative energy present. The smoke literally cuts through ALL kinds of negative energy and releases the energy immediately. 
 
Simply put some in a small tea strainer and hold over a gas stove or on a piece of hot coal.
